West Block - Section 23 Block 3 Parkes

GEOCON GROUP

In 2021 Purdon submitted a Works Approval (WA) application on behalf of GEOCON for the reinstatement of the heritage facade and construction of a new pavilion building at Block 3 Section 23 Parkes. The proposed works will transform West Block from a disused office building into a luxury hotel catering for Canberra’s growing 5-star visitor market whilst respecting the heritage values of the building and the place. Internal works to the building were also proposed which are exempt from the requirement for Works Approval.

The proposal is sited on land where jurisdiction for planning consent rests with the National Capital Authority (NCA). As the site is within the Parliamentary Zone, the proposal will require parliamentary approval.

The site is located on National Land and was subject to a Heritage listing. Thus, an EPBC self-assessment was undertaken establishing that the proposal will not have a significant heritage impact. A referral to the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment occurred concurrent to this Works Approval process.
