Building Heights in Canberra: What the Community Told Us

In August, we conducted a community survey to better understand local perspectives on building heights in Canberra. This work was prompted by growing interest from our clients, with many seeking a clear, evidence-based picture of how the community feels about this important planning issue.

We are pleased to share that 519 people took part in the survey, providing a strong and credible sample of community sentiment. Their responses offer valuable insights into how building height is perceived across different areas of Canberra, and the role it plays in shaping our city’s character, liveability, and growth.

Why this survey matters

Canberra is at a pivotal point in its urban development. Conversations around density, housing affordability, and sustainable growth are becoming increasingly important. Building height is often central to these debates, influencing everything from neighbourhood identity to transport networks and the way communities interact with public space.

By engaging with the broader community on their aspirations for Canberra’s future, this survey brings rigour and credibility to the discussion. Rather than relying on feedback tied to specific development proposals, we now have a representative dataset that captures the diversity of views held by Canberrans.

What’s next

This release is intended as a snapshot of what we heard from the community in August. While these high-level results provide an overview of local perspectives, the full dataset offers much deeper insights into how views on building height vary across Canberra.

If you are interested in exploring the results in more detail, please reach out to our team. We are happy to discuss the findings further and how they may inform planning and decision-making.

Thank you

We extend our sincere gratitude to all who participated. Your input provides the foundation for more meaningful, evidence-driven conversations about the future of Canberra’s built environment.
