The proposal envisions transforming this historic site into a welcoming, mixed-use precinct that celebrates its heritage while embracing Goulburn’s future. Mandala House will be preserved and enhanced, Marion Wing will be reimagined as quality short-term accommodation and new townhouses will provide modern homes for local families and downsizers.

Project Overview

Background

For nearly a century, this site has played a central role in Goulburn’s health services, including hosting the long-standing St John of God Hospital. Following the recent redevelopment of Goulburn Base Hospital, the Southern NSW Local Health District (SNSWLHD) has gradually relocated its services, completing the transition in 2026 when the site will be fully vacated.

Proposed Development

  • Preservation of Mandala House: Retain and enhance Mandala House to support the continued operations of We Help Ourselves, while improving its heritage presentation and contribution to the streetscape.

  • Adaptive Reuse of Marion Wing: Convert the newer Marion Wing into a motel, offering much-needed short-term accommodation, particularly for those visiting Goulburn Base Hospital.

  • Redevelopment of Former Hospital Areas: Demolish the outdated St John of God Hospital building to create opportunities for high-quality, contemporary redevelopment.

  • New Residential Development: Introduce a mix of single and two-storey townhouses that provide diverse housing options for families and downsizers alike.

  • Enhanced Public Amenity: Create attractive, connected landscaped spaces that foster community interaction, wellbeing, and a strong sense of place.

Owned by the Trustees of the Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, the property has been under active review for future use since SNSWLHD’s decision to move. Despite extensive efforts to identify new health-related operators, no viable proposals emerged. In response, the Trustees have developed a vision to repurpose the site into a vibrant mixed-use precinct that honours its heritage while supporting Goulburn’s evolving community needs.
